Department Overview

Since its establishment in 1968, the Department of Microbiology at HKU has leveraged its unique collaboration of clinician and basic scientists to contribute to scientific advancement and public health in the field of emerging infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

We also provide specialist clinical services at Queen Mary Hospital and other institutions of the HKU Health System, through which we impact patient care and specialist training in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. The scope of our services is constantly expanding. In 2020, with the support of the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong SAR Government, we established the Centre for Virology, Vaccinology and Therapeutics, which aims to accelerate the translation of our basic research to clinical practice.

In order to strengthen our collaboration with international partners, we have set up the Pandemic Research Alliance with Columbia University, Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Duke-NHS Medical School, Guangzhou National Laboratory, Tsinghua University, and the United Research Center of Innovative Drugs for Major Infectious Diseases at the Shanghai Institute of Infectious Disease and Biosecurity.
